The year began with a flurry of activity … our Annual Donor & Student Scholarship Recipient Reception was held in August and is a great way for our supporters to meet the students who benefit from their philanthropy!
We then quickly segued into September and our September Soirée at the exquisite Lake Fenton home of Ghassan and Manal Saab. This premiere event is the Foundation’s major fundraiser and is held every other year, benefiting the Endowment Growth Initiative.

The Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series hosted
Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a Montgomery, Alabama based non-profit organization that
is internationally renowned for its dedication to combating racism and injustice, as well as promoting tolerance and equality through research, education and litigation.
In late October, the Foundation hosted local artists Pauline Angle and Indy Bacon in a month-long exhibit
After having worked in many media ~ watercolor, oil and acrylic, etc. ~
I am now using paper collage on canvas to express my response to
the inner and outer world I feel and see … I try to match these to
the subject I am pursuing ~ whether it be semi-realism or completely
abstract. – Pauline Angle
My "Salvagettes" are all about giving new life to old things. Personalities evolve out of mounds of treasure… Treasures for me are old things with character. This could be anything from a lonely chair spindle with layers of
paint to a tarnished brass drawer-pull with an amazing floral design. A part of a part is great if it sparks my
imagination. I am interested in these things for their potential to become something other than what they were
intended to be. A newel post becomes a body; antique curtain rods are elegant wings and most hardware is fine
jewelry of sorts for the women I create. – Indy Bacon

April was host to three events!

Brenda Brisette Mata and educational sessions for women.

Later in April, the Foundation held a recognition ceremony honoring MCC Graduating Cosmetology Students and featuring the unveiling of the Arlene Martin Kocsis Cosmetology Scholarship!
The Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series hosted Dr. Jared Diamond, universally regarded as one of the great minds of our time. His Pulitzer-Prize winning book, Guns, Germs and Steel, has been a runaway best-seller, and the top selling science book on Amazon.com for five years running. Now, Collapse, his follow-up book has landed on the major best-sellers lists as well and is drawing critical reviews. Currently a professor of Geography at UCLA, he is also the author of two other best-selling books, The Third Chimpanzee and Why Is Sex Fun?

Group Girls Night Out, held a luncheon for women
at MCC’s Applewood Café. The event featured the
melodious sounds of MCC Board Trustee Sally Shaheen Joseph.
May brought dedication to people and programs!
The Foundation hosted a tree dedication honoring Frances Cleaves, a labor and
community warrior.
The MCC’s Nursing Program held it’s 50th Anniversary.
Citizens Bank Wealth Management, N.A. and the Foundation for MCC held Empower Yourselves! Planned Giving Seminar.
Mott Community College and the community celebrated the legacy
of Dr. Joyce Toet, commemorating 27 years of service. The event,
held at the Southern Lakes Branch Center, included a tree-planting
ceremony and plaque unveiling in Dr. Toet’s memory.
