AutoBody Repair and Painting
Associate in Applied Science Degree
This program is designed to give students the
knowledge and skills required to weld Autobody materials using MIG and resistance spot welders,
learn roughing, bumping and metal finishing and basic and advanced refinishing procedures.
Students will learn to estimate collision damage, correct damage to restore vehicles to
their original condition and learn techniques required to refinish vehicles.
Students will demonstrate proficiency in Autobody repair and painting.
A graduate with this degree may be employed as a:

The Career for You?
Because new cars are costly, many people are keeping
their cars longer and having them repaired. This trend increases
the demand for autobody technicians who can expect steady work
since the auto repair industry is not usually affected by changes
in the economy.
What does an Autobody Technician do?
- Repairs damaged vehicle body parts and structural components of automobiles, SUV's, and trucks.
- Appraises/estimates the cost of collision repairs using computerized processes
- Removes small and large damage with the use of various hand and power tools
- MIG, Resistance Spot and/or TIG welds replacement panels and structural components.
- Performs collision related mechanical repairs that may include the following areas:
- Steering-Suspension and Wheel Alignment
- Heating and Air Conditioning
- Electrical Systems including lighting, restraint systems and accessories
- Other Automotive Fundamentals
- Restores the finish of the vehicle using various refinishing products and topcoat systems

General
Education classes are required of all students seeking
an associate degree.
Students study safety practices in the shop in addition to professional
repair and painting techniques. The Auto Body Program provides state-of-the-art
facilities and equipment on which to learn. What degree will I have when I finish?
Students who complete the Autobody Repair and Painting Program
are candidates for an Associate in Applied Science degree. Auto
Service courses, required for the Autobody
Associates Degree, also apply toward the Automotive Technology. We encourage completion of the
dual associate degrees.
Where will I take classes?
Auto body repair and painting classes are offered only at the Southern
Lakes Branch Campus. General Education classes are available at
Main Campus, SLBC, Lapeer or NTC. Specialized auto mechanics classes
are held at MCC's main campus.
