Federal regulations require a student to make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in order to maintain eligibility for the following financial aid programs:
  • Michigan Adult Part Time Grant (MAPTG)
  • Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS)
  • Michigan Educational Opportunity Grant (MEOG)
  • Pell
  • Federal Stafford Loans
  • Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
  • Trustee Leadership Scholarship
  • Tuition Incentive Program (TIP)
  • Work Study

You are making satisfactory progress if you:

  • Establish and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher after attempting 12 credits (Fresh Start is not recognized in the financial aid GPA calculation).
  • Successfully complete at least 67% of the credits attempted (credit hours used to calculate financial aid). Successful completion does not include grades of I, W, U, N (audit), and any numerical grades of less than 1.0.

  • Do not exceed the maximum credit hour limit of 93 credits attempted toward a first associate's degree. The 93 credit maximum applies to all coursework attempted (classes financed by yourself, other aid sources, and transfer credits that fulfill area of study requirements). If you are receiving TIP, you have up to 80 credits of eligibility.

Appeal Process
If you violate the SAP policy, you will be notified of the nature of the violation and the right to appeal the decision to the SAP Appeal Committee. If you are enrolled in a current semester, you will have your refund held pending the outcome of the appeal. In the event your appeal is denied, you may be billed for all charges incurred. Excessive course withdrawals may be grounds for denial of the appeal. If you violate due to DOCUMENTABLE extenuating circumstances such as medical reasons, you must submit “medical” documentation completed by a medical professional along with your Statement of Appeal.

An appeal for reinstatement of TIP funding needs to be approved within two years of the violation.

Probationary Status
First time violators of SAP are allowed one probationary semester. Further violations will result in the suspension of financial aid. If you continue to maintain SAP, the probationary status will continue until graduation from MCC. Probationary status does not apply if you have exceeded the maximum credit hour limit.

Financial Aid Suspension
If you violate SAP after your probationary semester, you will be placed on financial aid suspension. Circumstances that may warrant an appeal include injury or illness, death of a close relative, or other DOCUMENTABLE extenuating circumstances.

Maximum Credit Hour Limit
If you have reached the 93 credit hour maximum you are no longer eligible for financial aid. If you have exceeded the credit limit while attempting a first degree, your appeal must include a current “Plan of Work” form. A “Plan of Work” form must be completed by an academic advisor identifying only the required courses needed to complete your degree. If you wish to receive additional financial aid to pursue a second degree, you must submit a detailed written request to the Student Financial Services Executive Director. Once the 80 credit hour maximum has been reached for TIP, you are no longer eligible for the TIP program (no exceptions).

Financial Aid Termination
Excessive violations of the SAP standards will result in the termination of your financial aid. In order to appeal and possibly regain eligibility, you must complete a minimum of six (6) credits hours at your own expense in courses that are applicable to your program, and establish an overall 2.0 GPA. An appeal for reinstatement of TIP funding needs to be approved within two years of the violation.

Loans
Student loan recipients must complete a minimum of six (6) credit hours each semester they are receiving loan funding. SAP violations could result in a loss of loan eligibility including any pending loan disbursements. Please note: approved SAP appeals do not guaranty eligibility for loan funding.

As part of Mott Community College’s Default Prevention Policy:

  • A student must have an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher (based on the student’s entire academic history) to be eligible for loans.
  • Academic history for the past 10 years is a consideration for loan funding regardless of GPA. Excessive withdrawals, incomplete grades, or adverse grades could result in denial of loan funding.

Work Study
If you violate the SAP standards, you must cease working immediately pending the outcome of the appeal. Approved appeals may reinstate employment.

Repeating a Course
You may repeat a course and receive financial aid if the original grade is not successful (I, W, U, N, grades less than 1.0). A grade of “D/1.0” is successful for financial aid purposes. The practice of repeating courses is not to be abused or financial aid will be terminated.
