Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, was on Wednesday September 17th. That’s the day that the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787. The holiday was established in 2004 and requires all publicly funded educational institutions to provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day.
MCC celebrated Constitution Day in a big way this year! The Social Science Division and Student Life worked together to put on a great program. The Grand Blanc City School sent a class of children to perform an act for us in front of the Prahl College Center by the flagpoles. The program was very well done and the children behaved perfectly, they were a joy to have on campus. Mr. Aaron Gulyas presided as MC for the program and after the children’s performance brought everyone in to Student Life where we had been watching America Rock! by Schoolhouse Rock and doing various activities such as the Bill of Rights word search and 10 Fast Facts about the Constitution.
Once inside, Mr. Gulyas introduced the panelists: Brian Harding (History Instructor), Paul Rozycki (Political Science Instructor), Jack Segal (Political Science Instructor), Christy Rishoi (Humanities Instructor), Glenn Harris (Humanities Instructor) as well as Aaron Gulyas himself who is a History Instructor. The panel discussed the Constitution and what it means to us as Americans.
The Student Life Center was packed – every seat was taken, students sat on the floor and hung about in the hallway while Administrators, Staff and Faculty stood in the background. The program lasted for at least two hours, with a great question and answer session after a quick break for sustenance in the form of pizza, pop and chips.
