The Career Factors Inventory (CFI) is designed to help people identify their own barriers in the career planning and decision-making processes. The CFI Self-Scorable booklet contains a 21-item measurement of the informational and emotional factors that can lead to career indecision. Based on the belief that most individuals can quickly identify the source of any obstacles in their career decision-making process, the CFI assesses four factors that can be grouped into two categories, information needs and decision needs.

To take the Career Factors Inventory assessment:

• Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating the Career Factors Inventory.
• Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center.
• Complete the Career Factors Inventory booklet.
• Return the completed CFI to the Career Resource Center staff; it will be forwarded to your counselor’s mailbox.
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results.

The CFI assessment takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

DISCOVER is a computer-based career planning and information program, developed by ACT, which can help you learn more about yourself and find occupations that might be right for you. DISCOVER will also help you identify what kind of skills and education you need for these occupations and locate the schools that offer the training.

The system includes:

• An inventory to help you know where you are now in your career planning
• Inventories to measure your interests, abilities, experiences, and values
• Ways to develop a list of occupations you should explore
• Ways to identify majors related to these occupations
• Extensive information about occupations
• Searches to identify schools
• Financial aid information
• Job searching tips

To use DISCOVER for assessment purposes:

• DISCOVER Windows Version
  • Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating DISCOVER
  • Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center and schedule a DISCOVER appointment
  • Obtain a DISCOVER Career Planning Guidebook from the Career Resource Center
  • Complete the guidebook and bring it with you at the time of your scheduled appointment
  • Allow 1-1½ hours for your initial visit. Depending on your needs, additional time may be required
  • Review your Career Plan Summary and other printouts
  • Bring your printouts with you when you meet with your counselor
  • Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

• DISCOVER Internet Version
  • Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating DISCOVER
  • Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center and schedule a DISCOVER appointment
  • Allow 1-1½ hours for your initial visit. Depending on your needs, additional time may be required
  • Obtain a User ID for the Internet Version from Career Resource Center Staff
  • Review your Career Plan Summary and other printouts
  • Bring your printouts with you when you meet with your counselor
  • Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

Allow 1-1½ hours to complete your initial DISCOVER assessment, additional time may be required and can be scheduled depending on your needs.

To use DISCOVER for informational purposes:

• Visit us in the Career Resource Center, PCC2050, on a walk-in basis or schedule an appointment to ensure availability
• One of the staff in the Career Resource Center will be able to assist you with exploring occupational information

The Michigan Occupational Information System (M.O.I.S.) is a career and college information delivery system for Michigan. Visit them at http://www.mois.org.

The system includes:

• An interest inventory to match your interests to the careers available in Michigan
• A set of resource files which contain occupational information on Michigan careers that match your interests and aptitudes
• A direct connection to Michigan schools and training sites
• Financial Aid Information

To take the M.O.I.S. Structured Search:

• Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating the MOIS Structured Search
• Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center
• Complete the M.O.I.S. worksheet using the instruction booklet
• Return the completed worksheet to the Career Resource Center staff, they will assist you in processing your worksheet using the MOIS computer program to produce a printout of matching occupational titles
• Use the list of occupations to guide you with further exploration
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

The M.O.I.S. assessment takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

The MBTI is one of the most widely used measures of personality preference. It can be used to help in choosing a school major, occupations and leisure interests. Also, it can assist you in recognizing compatible work settings and related career opportunities based on type preferences.

To take the Myers-Briggs assessment:

• Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
• Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center
• Complete the MBTI booklet
• Return the completed MBTI booklet to the Career Resource Center staff
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

The MBTI assessment takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.

The Self-Directed Search is a career interest inventory. Through a series of questions about aspirations, activities, occupations, skills and self-estimates of abilities, the SDS allows you to evaluate your career interests. The scores indicate compatible work environments and guide you to careers with identical and similar scores. The SDS is computer scored in the Career Resource Center and provides an interpretive report.

To take the Self-Directed Search :

• Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating the Self-Directed Search
• Complete the SDS booklet through page 10
• Return the completed SDS booklet to the Career Resource Center staff
• Allow 24-48 hours for the assessment to be scored and returned to your counselor
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

The SDS takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) compares an individual’s interests with the interests of people happily employed in a wide variety of occupations. It is a measure of interests, not of aptitude or intelligence, and it is used as an aid in making academic and career decisions. The SII is computer scored by a processing center and provides an interpretive report.

To take the Strong Interest Inventory Assessment :

• Obtain a referral form from your counselor, PCC2030, indicating the Strong Interest Inventory
• Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center, PCC2050
• Complete the SII booklet
• Return the completed SII booklet to the Career Resource Center staff
• Allow approximately two weeks for the assessment to be scored and returned to your counselor
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

The SII takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.

This report offers information about career choice and career search issues using a combination of Strong Interest Inventory and MBTI results. The report identifies suggested occupations with emphasis on those suggested by both instruments.

To take the Strong Interest Inventory/Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Combined Assessment:

• Obtain a referral form from counselor, PCC2030, indicating the Strong Interest Inventory/Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
• Bring the referral form to the Career Resource Center, PCC2050
• Complete both the Strong Interest Inventory/Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (SII/MBTI) booklet and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator booklet. Do not complete the back page of the SII/MBTI booklet
• Return the completed SII and MBTI booklets to the Career Resource Center staff
• Allow approximately two weeks for the assessment to be scored and returned to your counselor
• Follow-up with your counselor to discuss the results

The Strong Interest Inventory/MBTI combined booklet takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete and the MBTI booklet takes an additional 30-45 minutes to complete.
