MCC Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, April 19, 2008 – 9 am to 3 pm
All activities will be held in the Gorman Science Center unless noted below.

 

Presentations

Bats of the World: Organization for Bat Conservation provides an educational presentation with live visuals of bats AT 12:15pm & 1:30pm. This program is sponsored by the MCC Environmental Club and C.L.E.F.

Frogs, Frogs, and Frogs: Learn, see, and listen to frogs at the Nature Discovery presentation sponsored by the MCC Environmental Club and C.L.E.F.

Go Native: Presentation on native Michigan plants. Presentations by "Designs by Nature", Sue Tangora and Vern Stephens, sponsored by the MCC Gardening Association. Season permitting, native Michigan plants will be for sale.

Live Birds of Prey: Presenter Joe Rogers from Wildlife Recovery is a favorite of all ages! Learn about the lifestyle of birds from our state and have the opportunity to see these birds "in-person". Presentation is sponsored by MCC Phi Theta Kappa.

Invasive SpeciesPuppet Show: For all ages. Learn about invasive species. Sponsored by Flushing Township Nature Park and Wild Ones.

School Recycling Contest Awards: Genesee County Metroplanning Commission and CBC Recycling will be presenting awards to the area schools based on their recycling achievements.

Recycled Art Contest Awards: Recycled Art Contest Awards will be given following the School Recycling Contest Awards.

Silent Auction Winners: Winners of the Silent Auction will be announced at the end of award announcements.

Other Interest Areas

Bees, Honey & Information: Have you ever seen an observation bee hive? Interested in learning more about beekeeping or products from the beehive? Turtlebee & Honey Tree Farms will be hosting this display and information.

Child Fingerprinting and Domestic Violence Prevention: MCC Public Safety Department along with the 3P Club will be offering their services and information.

Community Penny Garden: Learn more about this wonderful community project from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Centers on a gardening theme, growing, recycling, etc. and will have seed packets available.

Earth Egg Hunt (Registration Required): The MCC Cheerleaders, along with the Bruin Bear will lead children to the secret locations (two locations based on age). Students are encouraged to recycle their eggs in the boxes provided.

12noon – The MCC Bruin Bear will lead Registered hunters to the secret location.

Energy Efficiency & Light Bulb Exchange for MCC Students: The MCC Environmental Club is hosting an Energy Efficiency information booth. Also supported by MCC Campus Life Enhancement Fund “CLEF” is a CFL / Incandescent light bulb exchange for MCC students. MCC students need to bring an MCC ID card and their incandescent bulbs (limit 2 per student) to sign the pledge for energy efficiency.

Free Manicures For You: The MCC Nail Technician Program is offering free manicures for those who want to celebrate the earth. The Curtice-Mott Complex right across from the Gorman Building.

Geology Museum Open House: Wonderful displays of rock, minerals, fossils, gemstones and our Mammoth that was excavated locally.

House Plant Sale: House plant sales in the MCC Greenhouse. Proceeds benefit the supplies for classroom learning.

Lapidary, Rocks, Gems and Grab Bags: The Flint Rock and Gem Club will be having lapidary demonstrations and "rocking grab bags" available in the room next to the Geology Museum.

Michigan White Pine Seedlings: The White Pine is our State tree and is essential to many native habitats. The Nepessing Group/Sierra Club has 100 White Pine tree seedlings available free to those who have a place to plant one.

Participate in a Native Blessing of the Earth: People are encouraged to join in or watch this celebration brought to us by the Kalpulli Tecpatl. MCC Counselor Celia Perez-Booth explains the processes in the blessing as people participate. The Blessing of the Earth is scheduled at the Barbara Stephenson tree on the lawn between the Prahl College Center and Curtice-Mott Complex, facing the parking lot. The group will then walk over to Gilkey Creek for a Blessing of the Water.

Recycled Art Projects: Students are encouraged to create their own recycled art projects prior to the Annual Earth Day & Garden Celebration. If created & submitted by 10am they can enter the Recycled Art Contest.

Art entries, along with the completed form need to be received by 10am on Saturday, April 19th.

2:30 ~ Awards Presented

Silent Auction Sales Help Support MCC Students: Many wonderful items (American Idol package, trees, garden items, etc.) have been donated to the Silent Auction that opens at 9am and closes at 2:30pm. The proceeds from this auction are for the Honorary Chet Wilson Environmental Scholarship. MCC Students who have participated in environmental activities are eligible for scholarship consideration.

Sunflower Seeds: Did you know sunflower plants absorb lead from the soil in their stalks? The MCC Environmental Club will also be handing out sunflower seeds for planting as they also help with native habitats. Compliments of Talerico's Nursery & Herbs.

University of Michigan, Early Childhood Development Center: This non-profit group will have hand-made all natural glycerin soaps and wheat grass available for sale to support their gardening and environmental projects.

Walker Farms & Greenhouse: Looking for more information on plants & vegetables from a local farm? Walker Farms & Greenhouse will be on hand to distribute helpful information and offer plants & vegetables for sale.

What's Growing in the Water?: Each year Darren Bagley from MSU-Extension leads this search for discovery of organisms in Gilkey Creek. People can meet in Gorman Room (TBA) and walk down with Darren at 9:45am (Frog Presentation follows).
