Mott Community College was awarded a three-year
grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
to establish the Flint North Central Community Outreach Partnership
Center (COPC). The Flint North Central COPC will engage faculty,
students, non-profit organizations, and the community in addressing
issues identified by community members around housing, job training,
crime prevention, and neighborhood beautification. The Flint North
Central COPC office is located in the Sylvester Broome Training Center.
Partners in the Flint North Central COPC include Career Alliance,
Contractors Assistance Program, Flint Neighborhood Improvement Association,
Flint Urban Gardening and Land Use Corporation, Greater Flint Health
Coalition, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, Metro Housing Partnership,
Mission of Peace Community Development Corporation, The Resource
Center, Salem Housing Community Development, and Weed & Seed. This collaborative
project also involves youth organizations, block clubs and churches
located within its geographical area. The projected outcomes of the
Flint North Central COPC include new career paths for youth in the
Building and Construction trades; a career laddering program for
individuals with Nurses Aide Certification; an increase in skilled
minority and women contractors; creation of a community accessible
Geographic Information System (GIS) database to improve housing planning
decisions as well as transportation planning including for those
with disabilities; and improvement and safety of neighborhoods. Mott
Community College was one of only two community colleges to receive
funding from HUD’s Community Outreach Partnership Center Program
in 2004. |
