Mott Honors College Hosts Successful Winter Retreat

Mott Honors College Hosts Successful Winter Retreat – this February the Mott Honors College held its annual Winter retreat in the RTC Building. The day of experiential activities was facilitated by Shannon Sabo and Jeff Kowalewski, MCC faculty members. Students participated in challenging activities on the ground, on the climbing towers and the high-ropes structure. A total of 35 Honors students participated in this annual team-building event.

Michigan Campus Compact Recognizes Two Mott Honors College Students

Michigan Campus Compact Recognizes Two Mott Honors College Students – Honors students LaTeqa Mack and Stephanie Pomper were selected by MiCC to receive the Outstanding Student Commitment to Service Award. Stephanie was involved in many service initiatives at Mott, including tutoring elementary students at Motherly Intercession. LaTeqa (aka, E.Z. Weezy) served as a member of the Mott Campus Clowns for two semesters. The annual MiCC recognition ceremony is held each spring at Michigan State University.

2016 Honors College Students Earn Top Awards

Ma Soledad Munoz and Amber Thompson received top honors at the 2016 MCC Commencement. Amber won the Phil Braun award as the top student in the 2016 graduating class. Ma Soledad received the Paul Karr award a recognition given to the top all-around graduate (e.g., academics, leadership, community service). Both provided rousing graduation speeches at the Perani Center in May.

HC Students Deliver Water to Pierce Elementary

Due to water quality concerns in Flint, local children are being asked to bring their own water to school. On October 8, 2015 Mott Honors College students delivered more than 100 cases of water to Pierce Elementary. The water was donated through the Foundation for MCC by members of the Mott Alumni Association. The students assisting with this service project were enrolled in the HONS 250: Social Diversity and Civic Engagement course.

Annual Honors College Fall Retreat a Resounding Success!

As a requirement for membership in the Honors College, students must attend one retreat per academic year. Retreats are schedule every September and February. On September 24th, the Honors College held its annual Fall Retreat in the MCC Event Center. More than sixty Honors College students and seven MCC faculty members attended.

Students attend Annual Michigan Honors Association (MHA) Conference

On October 3 - 4, ten Mott Honors College students attended the annual MHA conference. The conference was held at the MacMullan Center on Higgins Lake near Roscommon, Michigan. Honors students from across Michigan came together to explore the following theme: "Leaders and Role Models: Communicating, Mentoring, and Leading Through Transitions.

Honors College Students are All USA American Nominees

Mary Bennett and Robert Stamps were selected as MCC nominees for the All USA Academic Team. Mary's long term goal is to own her own business, but after working for a customer service-oriented hotel, restaurant or resort first. Robert's goal is to be a writer who is focused on creating works that showcase the positive attributes of "people of color" rather than the negative stereotypes. Both were honored at a ceremony held in April in Lansing.

HC Dinner and Medallion Ceremony

The Honors College held its annual dinner at the Event Center on the Friday before the Commencement Ceremony. The following is the breakdown of the twenty-seven students who earned Honors College recognition for 2015:

  • HC Diploma and Medallion – awarded to 23 MCC students
  • HC Certificate of Achievement – awarded to 2 MCC student
  • HC Certificate of Recognition – awarded to 2 MCC students

Mott Campus Clowns Appear at Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games

The Honors Program clown troupe performed at the summer Special Olympics, held in Mt. Pleasant May 28 – May 31. Eleven clowns entertained at the Opening Ceremonies as well as at the Closing Ceremonies & Victory Dance. The clown troupe also performed 30-minute comedy shows in the Special Events area. In addition, the student clowns had the experience of living in a residence hall at Central Michigan University.
