Why Professor Johnny Can't Read: Understanding the Net Generation's Texts
Thursday, September 11, 2008, 2:00 PM
Mark Mabrito and Rebecca Medley offer an analysis of the texts favored by the Net Generation. Arguing that the blogs, social networking sites, and other interactive venues favored by these students reflect cognitive differences wrought by a lifetime of technological immersion, Mabrito and Medley suggest that instructors can benefit by learning to "read" these electronic texts, which must be understood differently than the paper texts of previous generations, and by leveraging them as pedagogical opportunities.

The Interactive Syllabus: Modifications and New Insights
Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 11:00 AM
Scott Windham offers a practical discussion of a tool designed to accommodate students' varied learning preferences. Adapting Sylvie Richards's interactive syllabus, Windham discusses the opportunities and challenges presented by his own use of an online, resource-rich assignment guide in German-language classes.

The Net Generation Cheating Challenge
Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 11:00 AM
Valerie Milliron and Kent Sandoe focus on a more troubling difference: the apparent indifference of Net-Generation students toward cheating. Detailing their own experience with a pattern of cheating on online quizzes, Milliron and Sandoe describe the Net Generation's culture of cheating and describe ways to detect or, even better, deter cheating.

Mediating the Tensions of Online Learning with Second Life
Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 1:00 PM
Nancy Evans, Thalia M. Mulvihill, and Nancy J. Brooks argue that online education must satisfy perennial human needs for belonging and self-activation. E-mail and threaded discussion boards cannot foster the relationships that meet such needs; Evans, Mulvihill, and Brooks suggest that Second Life and similar multiuser virtual environments can provide a sense of presence and community that satisfies these needs while offering all of the benefits of online education.

Public Webinar: Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic Update
Thursday, September 18 at 2 PM Eastern
Presenter: Steve Noble
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) has been the leader in providing quality audio text books for students for half a century. Going from disks to real-to-real tapes, cassette tapes and now to digital books, RFB&D continues to blaze the trail for accessibility. RFB&D is launching a new service which allows members to download AudioPlus textbooks directly to your computer and then transfer to portable media players. Of course, anyone that prefers to get the CDs through the mail can still order them that way. This is simply a new service that gives users more options on how to receive and use AudioPlus textbooks. "RFB&D members can now choose to download these audio textbooks and literature directly to a Windows-compatible computer. AudioAccess is easy to use and portable! If you choose, once the books have been downloaded, they can be synced with a compatible portable media player for take-anywhere convenience." Register for the RFB&D Public Webinar at easi.cc/forms/rfbd.htm

Public Webinar: Understanding Electronic Document Formats
Thursday, September 25 at 2 PM Eastern
Presenter Robert Beach
There are many document formats available to computer users. However, are they all accessible? Are they all navigable? Are they all usable for accommodation and/or production purposes? What are the pluses and minuses of the different file types? This webinar will look at several of the common document formats used as both accommodations for individuals with disabilities and production files in producing accessible materials. Some of the document formats that will be discussed are: plain text format (TXT), rich text format (RTF), Word Document format (DOC), hypertext markup language format (HTM), Portable Document Format (PDF), WYNN (WYN), Kurzweil (KES), and DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System). Register for this public Webinar at easi.cc/forms/doctypes.htm

EASI Interactive, Live Webinars
EASI is producing Interactive Webinars on specific accessibility-related topics. Participants can listen to the presenter, and watch as the presenter pushes Web pages and also ask questions yourself. The new series is Webinar Snapshots consisting of short focused presentations dealing with issues most relevant to beginner and intermediate creators of accessibility content.

Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Version 2 Guidelines
September 11 at 2:00 PM Eastern

Valencia's Learning Conversations Conference is designed to elicit purposeful and substantial conversation around these changes, build on current approaches, and consider future steps to support the success of our students, faculty, staff and communities.
