Description: Inspired by the recent surge in vampire fiction, television, and film in American popular culture, this seminar will explore the origins and evolution of the vampire myth in nineteenth-century British and twentieth-century American fiction. We will look at texts such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, in the historical contexts of their first publication, noticing how the vampire offers a metaphor through which writers and readers explore the fears and desires that preoccupy their particular cultural moments.
