MCC Program Information
Pre-Admission Information Sheet: find out about Physical Examination, Time Commitment, Tuition, Travel ,Additional Cost
To be placed on the PTA Eligibility List* complete the following four requirements:
- Demonstrate at least an 11th Grade Reading Comprehension level on MCC Placement Test or complete ENGL 020 (Reading course) with a satisfactory ("S") grade.
- Complete one of the following:
a. Placement Score of Math 120 or higher
b. Score 22 or better on Math Portion of the ACT or 560 on the Math Portion of the SAT
c. Complete Math 110 or higher with at least a 2.0
- Complete Verification of Physical Therapy Observation Form (*minimum eight hours of observation of physical therapy).
- Submit a PTA Program Supplemental Application Form.
Note: *Placement on the PTA Eligibility List does not guarantee admission into the PTA program. A maximum of 24 students are admitted to the program each year. Deadline dates for receipt of Supplemental Application and Verification of Physical Therapy Observation are January 15th and May 15th of each year. Students are placed on the eligibility list two times per year in order of matriculation date (semester first attended courses) at MCC.

IS PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT THE CAREER FOR YOU?
What does a Physical Therapist Assistant do?
Physical therapist assistants (PTA) work under the supervision of physical therapists in providing specific patient services for the prevention or alleviation of physical impairment. It is an interesting, varied, people-oriented, hands-on occupation.
General duties of a physical therapist assistant may include...

Assisting the physical therapist in collection of information about the patient. This may include performance of varied tests to determine limitations or changes in range of motion, strength, functional ability, or neurological status.

Administer treatment interventions such as therapeutic exercises to condition, strengthen or stretch muscles.

Administer treatment interventions to decrease pain, muscle spasm, or swelling through the use of physical agents such as light, heat, water and/or electricity.

Education of patients and/or their families in exercise activities of daily living, self-care and other health care promotion areas.

Observing the effects of various treatments and modifying the treatment within the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
What kind of classes will I need to take
at MCC?
In addition to general education
classes required of all students seeking associate's degrees, in
the Physical Therapist Assistant Program you will study anatomy
and physiology, kinesiology, physical science, psychology, therapeutic
procedures and modalities, medical terminology, and rehabilitation
procedures. All PTA laboratory courses are held at the Southern Lakes Branch Center - Fenton. PTA lecture courses, as well as General Education
courses are offered at both SLBC and the Main campus.
As you advance in your studies you will take part in a clinical
practice and internship in which you will apply your knowledge and
skills to actual patient care under the close supervision of a physical
therapist.
What are my career options and job opportunities
in this field?
Growth outlook for positions as a
physical therapist assistant is faster than average through the
year 2006, according to the Michigan Occupational Information System
MOIScript. Salaries vary depending upon location within the state.

are PTA employment opportunities in the physical therapy departments
of acute care hospitals, rehabilitations centers, outpatient clinics,
school systems, industrial clinics, sports medicine centers, nursing
homes, and home health care agencies.
What about cooperative, internship, or apprentice
opportunities?
The Mott Community College PTA program
is affiliated with approximately 65 physical therapy centers within
a 70-mile radius of the college. Your part-time clinical practicums
are scheduled at these facilities. Full-time internships may be
local or out-of-state. There are many volunteer opportunities at
local outpatient clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, children's camps
or with the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
What degree will I hold when I finish?
When you complete the Physical Therapist
Assistant program at Mott Community College you are a candidate
for an Associate in Applied Science degree.
This program has been granted accreditation
by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
