The Bear Trap, an Entrepreneurship Competition The Ballenger held The Bear Trap, an Entrepreneurship Competition, inspired by ABC12's Shark Tank on April 11, 2013. Presentations were given at 3 levels: high school, college, and community.

The winners of the Bear Trap Entrepreneurship Competition were announced Thursday, April 18, 2013. The winners in all three categories are:
High School:
1st place - Saterra Hill, Just 4 Me Kids Fitness Camp, a 501(c)3 started to encourage kids 5-12 to exercise for fun. Saterra is a sophomore at Genesee Early College on the campus of UM-Flint.
2nd place - Adam Brown, Adam Brown Technologies, producing devices to aid in mobility for the physically challenged. Adam is a senior at Lincoln High School in Owosso.
3rd place - Psalm Bingham, Carpe Diem, a cafe and cupcake/bakery. Psalm is a student at Flint Southwestern High School.
1st place
- Chad Bergstrom, Bright Advances, a producer of lighted Christmas and other holiday and specialty decorations. Chad is a Business Management major.
2nd place
- Connie Bowren, Hideout Refuge & Cafe, a teen cafe and activity center. Connie is a Culinary Student.
3rd place - Lisa Long, Lisa's Chocolate Creations, a company specializing in custom chocolate treats. Lisa is an Accounting major.
1st place
- Eric Smith, Grown-Up Foods, a hydroponics company specializing in fresh fish and vegetables.
2nd place
- Ankhasia Lewis, The Butter Lid, a unique lid designed for popcorn lovers.

The Ballenger featured Kathleen Glynn, noted Film and Television Producer, in April 2010. Kathleen Glynn is the Executive Producer of Dog Eat Dog Films, Inc. and has made seven feature documentaries since 1989. In 2009, she produced “Capitalism: A Love Story” which won the Little Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In 2006 she was the Executive Producer of “SiCKO,” a film that highlights the lack of health care in America. “SiCKO” was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Documentary at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards. In addition, Kathleen produced the critically acclaimed documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11.” One of the most controversial and provocative films of the year of 2004, “Fahrenheit 9/11” won the Palme D’Or at the 2004 Cannes Film festival and went on to break box office records for documentary film. In 2002 Glynn received worldwide acclaim for the documentary, "Bowling for Columbine,” ! including the 55th Annual Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, France’s César Award for best foreign film, the Independent Spirit Award, and the Academy Award in 2003 for best documentary. With director Michael Moore, she produced and was responsible for films such as ”Roger & Me” (1989), “Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint,” “Canadian Bacon,” and “The Big One” (1998).
