Mott Community College (MCC) Sign Language Interpreter Training Program students will bring stories to life for the Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and hard of hearing children this summer during the family friendly story time at Applewood: the Charles Stewart Mott Estate, May through October.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to gain practical experience to compliment the lessons learned in the classroom,” said Jennifer Doerr, Coordinator for the American Sign Language Interpreter Training program at the College. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to be of service to members of the Deaf Community by providing access to these wonderful events at the Applewood Estate.”

“Our students are in high demand when they complete their state certification,” said Doerr.

There is currently high demand for Sign Language interpreters due to a 2014 rule designed to protect the deaf that calls for interpreters in hospitals, courts and law offices to take a test and become certified by the state under law.

Students pursuing a career as a Sign Language Interpreter at MCC earn an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science. The MCC program in interpreting prepares them for basic entry-level skills in sign language interpreting and transliterating. The American Sign Language courses prepare students to communicate effectively in ASL, while Interpreter Education courses provide theories of interpreting, as well as specific training for interpreting/transliterating skill development. Students gain a working knowledge of the Deaf Community, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, certification options, and the field of interpreting in various settings.  For more information about the Sign Language Interpreter program at MCC visit

Story Time at Applewood is designed for families with young children and will be presented every Friday May through October at 11:30 a.m. on the grounds of the Applewood Estate. Student interpreters will also be provided for the activity time following the stories, and a tour following storytime.

Interpreting services will be provided the first Friday of the month by Communication Access Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Interpreting services provided for all other storytimes are provided by the MCC Interpreter Training Program Students and Certified Supervising Interpreters.
