Southern Lakes Center Renovation
With the signing of the State Budget for 2018 on July 14, Mott Community College (MCC) has the go-ahead to begin an $8.1 million renovation of its Southern Lakes Branch Center (SLBC) in Fenton Township.
The renovation project was submitted to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget as part of the Capital Outlay Request process requesting a 50 percent State funding match. With approval of the project, the State will contribute $4.05 million to the project and the College will provide $4.05 million in bond funding. The State has given MCC permission to begin the work necessary to prepare the SLBC Renovation Project for construction.
“This renovation project will enable us to perform nearly a complete remodel of the building,” said Larry Gawthrop, Chief Financial Officer for the College. “The renovations will enhance and upgrade classroom facilities and laboratories, replace and improve the operating efficiency of heating and cooling systems, upgrade water supply and building fire safety systems, and repair or replace exterior wall systems including exterior doors and windows.”
“This work will help MCC maintain its mission to provide high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities, while ensuring energy efficiency and health and safety of its students, staff, and community well into the future,” Gawthrop added.
The SLBC facility houses the Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy, the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy degree programs, in addition to general education classes. It was formerly owned by Consumers Energy. The College purchased the building in 1991.
