The Mott Community College Honors College Clown Troupe is heading to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh for an alternative Spring Break service trip, where they will perform in the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 10.

The eleven-member troupe (including Dr. Ivory) will take their anti-bullying magic show “on the road” with the Alternative Spring Break service trip in Philadelphia, March 7-17. While in Philadelphia they will perform at elementary schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and the VA Hospital. Their final performance of the academic year will be back on campus Friday, March 22 for their annual show at 5:00 pm in the MCC Event Center. The final show is free and open to the public.

The Mott Campus Clowns are a trained clown troupe made up of honor’s students, and they are serious about the issue of bullying. Seven years ago, the group launched a new anti-bullying project to help educate elementary school students on how to stop or prevent bullying. Since they started, the troupe has performed more than eighty shows for more than 16,000 children.

Dr. Brian Ivory, Honors Program coordinator at MCC, oversees the Mott Campus Clowns, a troupe comprised of eight MCC honor students enrolled in the service learning course, Social Diversity and Civic Engagement Lab (HONS 251).

As a course requirement, students enrolled in HONS 251 each develop a unique clown character complete with a clown name, costume and make-up. The students also spend seven weeks rehearsing an anti-bully program they will perform the next month at schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and parades.

All of the appearances of the Mott Campus Clowns are supervised by Ivory, (a.k.a. Dr. Bubby the Clown). Ivory is a 1987 graduate of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. In 2011 he "un-retired" from clowning to recruit and train the Mott Campus Clowns in service of the troupe’s motto: “Turning Frowns Upside Down… One Smile at a Time.” Sponsorship of the Mott Campus Clowns is provided by Mott Community College, primarily through student activity fees.
