Celebrate Earth Day April 13 at MCC
Celebrate Earth Day April 13 with Mott Community College, (MCC), the University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint), and Kettering University. The three colleges have teamed up to sponsor the Flint area’s community Earth Day Celebration 2019, featuring live animals, free seedlings, food trucks, and more! This year’s Earth Day Celebration will be April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Regional Technology Center on the MCC main campus in Flint. The event is free and open to the public. More than 30 exhibitors from the area will participate.
The event includes a wide variety of activities for all ages:
• Make your own FREE up-cycled t-shirts, screen printed on site by MCC’s Graphics Design students and Jim Shurter, Associate Professor of Art;
• See live reptiles and amphibians native to Michigan up close. Nature Discovery will have snakes, lizards and turtles, including informative presentations about the animals and their habitats;
• FREE tree seedlings from the Sierra Club;
• See live Birds of Prey, as Joe and Barb Rogers teach and inform about these majestic and fascinating birds;
• Environmental presentations on relevant and timely topics;
• A recycled art contest for all ages, judged by UM-Flint Art Department Faculty & Staff;
• Earth-friendly product vendors; and
• Food trucks offering food for purchase.
“We are excited this year to have Professor Shurter and his students up-cycling t-shirts with original screen print designs to give away free to all our guests,” said Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez, Earth Day Planning Team and MCC Green Initiatives Team (GRiT) Chair. “The goal is for the entire event to be a zero waste event, which is underscored by the up-cycled shirts and our recycled art contest,” she added.
The University of Michigan- Flint will bring Nature Discovery back this year for visitors to learn more about native Michigan reptiles and amphibians,” said Lora Rometsch, Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator at UM-Flint. John Albright, student in the Health Education program at UM-Flint and part of the Earth Day planning team said “Students have played a big role in the event’s success in the past and we are encouraging students to volunteer and help facilitate the Zero Waste efforts at the event.”
"Kettering University is pleased to once again partner with our fellow colleges for this year's Earth Day Celebration. We look forward to helping foster green initiative efforts,” said Katie Jones, Kettering University Auxiliary Services Assistant.
