MCC Fine Arts Gallery to feature Flint area artist Charles Boike

The Mott Community College Fine Arts Gallery will present an exhibition of  paintings by Flint area artist Charles Boike titled High Profile. His exhibition will be in the gallery from Monday, April 8 through Tuesday, April 23. In addition, Boike will give a talk about his work in the gallery on Tuesday, April 9 at 1 p.m., in the Visual Arts and Design Center, room 128.

These events are made possible in part by the Ballenger Trust.

Charles Andrew Boike, a.k.a. “Wake Up,” was born in Detroit and raised in Flint. In 2008, he graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College of Chicago. In 2012, he obtained his Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Charles is an urban graffiti artist at heart. His gallery work depicts American iconography with the flare of pop art and essence of street and freight train graffiti. His exhibitions, projects and publicity include: Progressive Biennial Art juried art showcase, cover of and feature article, “Taking it to the Streets”, My City Magazine-Flint, Crim Festival of Races backdrop for promotional video, and the Flint Institute of Arts Art Show, Bishop Gallery “Artery Allies.”

His Artist Statement:
“I’m inspired by the choice of freedom, exercise of free speech, bright vivid colors, and anything that breaks away from traditional mindsets. I feel a need to create a legacy of how I interpret my existence. I use my paintings as a vehicle to create conversations within an individual by finding ways to juxtapose traditional and non-traditional elements.”

The MCC Fine Arts Gallery is located in room 128 of the Visual Arts and Design Center on the Mott Community College main campus in Flint at 1401 E. Court St, Flint. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibition and presentations are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Art and Design office at 810-762-0443.
