Drummer Mark Holen to perform with MCC Jazz Band
Jazz musician Mark Holen will perform a concert with the Mott Community College (MCC) Jazz Band and Jazz Combo Tuesday Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Mott Memorial Building Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted toward MCC’s Music Scholarship Fund.
He will also offer a master class for MCC Music students on Monday, Dec. 9 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Mott Memorial Building Auditorium. This event is also free and open to the public.
“This is an outstanding opportunity for our students to learn from and work with a professional musician of Mr. Holen’s caliber,” said Dr. Townes Miller, Associate Profess or of Music. “It helps our students understand the possibilities for their careers,” she added.
Mark Holen, originally from Flint, Michigan, has played with some of the best jazz musicians of those times including Sherm Mitchell, Dave Catherwood, and Wendell Harrison. In 1975, Holen moved to New York City and landed the job of house drummer at the famous Chateau Madrid nightclub where he played with many Latin and Flamenco musicians, singers and dancers.
Having recorded four albums of original music with his band "Zambomba,” Holen has also recorded on Blue Note records with Bob Dorough, Phil Woods, Billy Hart, Ray Drummond and Bill Goodwin. He also has played in clubs or concerts with: Chet Baker, Hubert Laws, David Liebman, Danilo Perez, Cameron Brown, Jorge Pardo, Miguel Chastang and many others.
He was a professor of music theory, piano and percussion at the Hot Club jazz school in Lisbon, Portugal, and in 2014 he was a guest professor, performer and lecturer at the 12th International Percussion Festival of Patagonia in General Roca, Argentina.
Holen is currently working with Jesus Hernandez and the New Bojaira and is writing big band arrangements for the People's Jazz Band in Flint, Michigan.
