MCC announces three new Music transfer agreements with UMF

Aspiring musicians now have three more pathways to a career in music performance and music education. The Music Department at Mott Community College (MCC) now offers three new transfer agreements to UM-Flint for students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Music (B.M.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.). The three new transfer agreements are in addition to MCC’s standing transfer agreement with Saginaw Valley State University Music Department.

MCC currently offers two music degrees, the Music Associate in Fine Arts Degree, designed for students who plan to transfer to a university, college, or conservatory and major in music; and the Music Technology Associate Degree in Applied Science that prepares students for careers in music production, recording, and audio engineering.

“The MCC Associate Degree in Fine Arts music curriculum is commensurate with the first two years of the academic curriculum at all music schools,” said Dr. Townes Miller, Associate Professor of Music at MCC. “We’re very excited to be able to offer our students three new transfer opportunities toward pursuing music professionally.”

The Associate in Fine Arts Degree is focused on music foundation classes and general education requirements that are designed to easily transfer to four-year institutions and music conservatories. This degree track offers students the ability to take all of the same classes they would find in any music program, including: music theory, aural skills, piano proficiency, ensembles, lessons and much more.

“Additional benefits of our program include low cost tuition, small class size, many performance opportunities and exceptional faculty,” Dr. Miller added.

In order to be a music major at MCC, interested students must apply to the College, fill out the online music program application found at, take the music theory placement exam, and schedule an audition.

Students who are interested in pursuing an Associate of Fine Arts degree in Music at Mott and transfer to UM-Flint or SVSU should contact the music coordinator, Dr. Townes Osborn Miller at or the division office at 810-762-0332.

The MCC Music Technology degree integrates the latest in audio technology with diverse courses involving music creation, post-production, scoring for media, and live sound reinforcement, supplemented by music fundamentals, ensemble performance, and music business courses. Emphasis is placed on the technical, logistical, and creative skills required to be competitive in today's music technology and sound engineering job market.

The Music Department at Mott Community College offers a comprehensive two-year collegiate music program designed to fulfill the freshman and sophomore requirements needed to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Unique to MCC among community colleges, the College has both a strong jazz studies and chamber ensemble program. Offering a broad musical curriculum from classical to jazz and commercial music, the music department serves a wide variety of students.
