02/03/2020

Two Mott Community College Culinary Arts Students won awards at the 27th Annual Hot Food Competition on Jan 27, at Zehnder’s Restaurant in Frankenmuth.

Zenos Dupuis, of Zilwaukee, and Martina LaNone, of Otter Lake, representing the MCC Coffee Beanery, won Gold in the Pork Category for their entry “Eye Gouging Marcy Cutler Spareribs/Pineapple Mango BBQ.”

This year’s theme was Pirates in Paradise – “A Culinary Salute to Caribbean Cuisine.” Professional chefs competed with original recipes based on a Caribbean theme. Proceeds support the Saginaw East Side Soup Kitchen “After School Meal Program.” Visitors enjoy samples of the chef’s creations as well as grand buffets featuring whole roasted Cuban pig wrapped in banana leaves, Jamaican oxtail stew and much more, presented by area culinary students from Mott Community College and the Saginaw Career Center of Culinary Arts.

MCC offers a superior educational experience in the art of cooking at the newly renovated Culinary Arts Institute. Boasting a 36,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility, the Institute features multiple culinary and baking laboratories, garde manger classroom, chocolates and confections laboratory, and an upscale casual restaurant to give you, our student, experience in all aspects of the food service industry. In addition, the facility houses a temperature-controlled wine cellar and dry-aged meat room.

As part of the program’s coursework, students operate the upscale casual Restaurant, Applewood at Second & Saginaw, and the Coffee Beanery, with specialty menus curated by both faculty and students. By honing their craft in these real-world establishments, students gain experience in either a restaurant or café-style food service environment.

At the Culinary Arts Institute, students have the option to complete an associate's degree in Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, Food Service Management, or begin their journey with a one-year certificate in Professional Cooking or Professional Baking. Courses are taught by award-winning, certified executive chefs, and food service professionals with years of industry experience.
