Science and Mathematics Division Awards

Each year, the Science and Mathematics Division recognizes students for academic excellence. Award winners are selected based upon a combination of courses taken, credit hours earned, difficulty of courses, and grades earned. The students are nominated by faculty in the division.

    Two MCC Students Named as Siemens Technical Scholars

    Two MCC Associate of Science degree graduates were named 2017 Siemens Technical Scholars by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program (CEP) and the Siemens Foundation. Usama Khalid, and Amber Thompson were among 51 exceptional community college students selected from some of the nation’s strongest community college programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which provide outstanding preparation for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and information technology.

    MCC's Science and Mathematics Division's Associate of Science degree was recognized by The Aspen Institute and Siemen's Company as one of the top STEM Degree Programs across the country, and the only non-Occupational STEM Degree Program listed.

  • Ahti A. Mackela Award

    The Ahti A. Mackela Award is a $300 award. Ahti Mackela was a division chair and chemistry faculty member in the Science and Mathematics Division. This award goes to a student of sophomore status with excellent academics in at least three different division disciplines.

    Caraway - Walworth Award

    The Caraway - Walworth Award is a $200 award. Kathryn P. Caraway was a chemistry and mathematics faculty member before becoming an adviser in the Science and Mathematics Division. William R. Walworth was a provost of Mott Community College and a mathematics faculty member. This award goes to a student of freshman status with excellent academics in at least two different division disciplines.

    Dennis J. Saturnino MCC/Kettering Scholarship

    The Dennis J. Saturnino MCC/Kettering Scholarship is a $200 award. Dennis Saturnino was a chemistry faculty member in the Science and Mathematics Division. This award goes to a student with excellent academics in science and mathematics who is also planning to transfer to Kettering University.

    Biology Health Science Award

    The Biology Health Science Award goes to a student with excellent academics in Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, and Microbiology.

    Geology Science Award

    The Geology Science Award goes to a student who completes Physical Geology with high academic achievement. Preference is given to students considering pursuing a career in the geosciences.
