Degree Description

Imagine a future as a composer or a music director! Considering the possibility of teaching music to the promising students of tomorrow? Musicians and singers, music therapists and instrument repairers are always in demand. All of these paths and more are possible through the MCC Associate in Fine Arts – Music program.

The Associate in Fine Arts Degree - Music is designed for students who plan to transfer to a university, college, or conservatory and major in music. Focus is on music foundation classes and general education requirements that will transfer to other institutions. Degree Pathway

Degree Pathways outline one possible sequence of courses students may complete to fulfill their degree requirements as full-time students over the course of two years.

NOTE: For MUS.-111, MUS.-112, MUS.-211 and MUS.-212 These courses are for music majors only (by audition). Non-majors wishing to take all other music courses are welcome to and receive an AA degree following the AFA General Pathways.

Program Information

To apply to become a music major in the Mott Music Program, applicants will need to complete to following:

 
  1. Application for the Music Program which includes our Scholarship application - online at www.music.mcc.edu
  2. Schedule an audition with the Fine Arts and Social Sciences office: (810) 762-0332
    • Audition information requirements vary depending on which instrument. You may request a copy of the audition/student handbook at any time.
  3. Complete the Music Theory placement exam (ideally prior to June 28 - before the start of the summer session). The exam is located in the Testing Center (3rd floor of the library). Students must bring their photo I.D. and a pencil.

Music majors are required to participate in Band (instrumentalists) or Choir (vocalists) for four semesters. A chamber ensemble may be substituted for jazz majors (Jazz Ensemble) guitarists (Guitar Ensemble) and string and piano players (String Ensemble/Piano Trio).
