Consumers Energy Electric Lineworker Pre‑Apprenticeship Training Program

The Program prepares students for careers as electrical power-line installers and repairers, working on cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. This job may also include erecting poles and light- or heavy-duty transmission towers.

Many people rely on electrical powerline installers and repairers every day – and with great power comes a great salary! This career field is growing, with more than 100 job openings each year, and a pay range of $60,000+ annually.

The 9 steps to joining the Consumers Energy Lineworker Pre-Apprentice Training Program:

  1. Attend an information session hosted by Mott Community College in partnership with Consumers Energy.
  2. Complete all required paperwork through the division of Workforce and Economic Development at Mott Community College.
  3. Program interview.
  4. Program acceptance.
  5. Complete MCC 10-week core curriculum:
    • EIF
    • Industrial Safety
    • Basic Electricity
    • Apprenticeship
    • Math
    • Physical Fitness
  6. Attend two Climbing Clinics at the Consumers Energy training facility in Marshall, MI.
  7. Attend and pass a three-day orientation at the Consumers Energy training facility in Marshall, MI.
  8. Complete an online profile for Consumers Energy, including submitting a copy of your driving record, drug screen results and background check results.
  9. Attend and pass the 11-week Climb School at the Consumers Energy training facility in Marshall, MI
