Consumers Energy Electric Lineworker Pre‑Apprenticeship Training Program

The Program prepares students for careers as electrical power-line installers and repairers, working on cables or wires used in electrical power or distribution systems. This job may also include erecting poles and light- or heavy-duty transmission towers.

Many people rely on electrical powerline installers and repairers every day – and with great power comes a great salary! This career field is growing, with more than 100 job openings each year, and a pay range of $60,000+ annually.

The 8 steps to joining the Consumers Energy Lineworker Pre-Apprentice Training Program:

  1. Enroll in the MCC Electric Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program.
  2. Take the five foundational bundle courses at MCC:
    • Energy Industry Fundamentals
    • Industrial Safety
    • Basic Electricity
    • Basic Math
    • Linework Physical Fitness
  3. Attend an MCC information session.
  4. Complete an online profile for the program through Electric Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program.
  5. Submit current driving record and complete drug screening.
  6. Attend two Consumers Energy climbing clinics. Must be 18 or older.
  7. Attend and pass a Consumers Energy three-day orientation.
  8. Attend and pass a Consumers Energy 11-week climb school.
