In April 2026, the Board of Trustees of Mott Community College placed a proposal on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot for voters to decide whether to support a renewal of its voter-approved operating millage.
Mott Community College is asking voters whether they approve the renewal of its voter-approved operating millage. This millage was last approved by voters in 2016.
A millage is a property tax that allows a public institution (such as Mott Community College) to raise revenue each year that helps to fund its day-to-day operations. In MCC’s case, these daily activities include providing more than 130 different academic and workforce development programs which serve nearly 12,000 students.
MCC’s voter-approved operating millage generates $8.9 million per year, providing important support for keeping tuition affordable, helping fund academic and workforce development programming, employing faculty and staff members and providing individualized student support services. These millage funds represent 9% of MCC’s annual operating budget.
Mott Community College, like all community colleges in Michigan, relies on a diverse mix of revenue to operate its programs, educate students, support the community and fulfill its mission. These funds come from a variety of federal, state and local sources, including tuition, federal grants, state appropriations and local millage tax funding.
Under Michigan law, a community college’s voter-approved operating millage goes before the voters once every 10 years. If approved, MCC’s operating millage renewal request, previously approved in 2016, is not a request to increase taxes.
If the voter-approved operating millage is not renewed by voters before 2028, operational funding for MCC would decrease and could lead to changes in tuition rates, educational programming, student services, and employment levels.
The amount a property owner pays in taxes is based on the value of their property. For example, a homeowner with a house valued at $250,000 would pay $76.90 per year as a result of the voter-approved operating millage.
MCC’s millage renewal request will appear on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot. Registered voters who live within the Genesee Intermediate School District are eligible to vote.
