Disability Services works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to create an inclusive educational environment for students. Academic accommodations mean to "level the playing field without lowering academic standards." This means students are still expected and responsible to master the same content as others. However, the ways in which a student accesses the content may be in an alternate way.
Confidentiality is important and required when working with students with disabilities. Do not disclose a student's disability to another student. Remember, a student with a disability is first a student.
Make a general announcement at the beginning of each new semester and include a statement regarding the availability of the MCC Office of Disability Services for student's in need of assistance due to a disability.
Disabilities do not excuse students from adhering to the Student Code of Conduct. Hold the student accountable for their actions and take appropriate measures to address matters when a student violates the Student Code of Conduct.

One important goal of the MCC Office of Disability Services staff is to work with faculty to ensure the success of students with disabilities.
Mott Community College is required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 to provide effective auxiliary aids and services for qualified students with documented disabilities, if such accommodations are needed to provide equitable access to the College's programs and services.
Mott Community College is a public institution and receives federal financial aid; both Section 504 and The Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act apply.
The MCC Office of Disability Services does not determine attendance policies. Attendance policies are created by academic departments and faculty. Federal law requires MCC to consider reasonable accommodations for attendance if needed to accommodate a student’s disability. The MCC Office of Disability Services can provide verification that a student has a disability which may impact the student’s class attendance. An attendance accommodation is not a blanket reason for the student to regularly miss class. While a student with a disability may have an attendance accommodation in place, excessive absences may have a negative impact on a student's financial aid status. Students concerned about their attendance should be referred to the MCC Office of Disability Services to discuss their options.
Mott Community College has adopted a standard syllabus statement that is mandatory to include on all course syllabi. The inclusive of such a statement protects the College while also providing clear expectations to students with disabilities. Requests for accommodations by students with disabilities can be made by contacting the Disability Services office at (810) 232-9181 or on the web at disability.mcc.edu. Once eligibility for an accommodation has been determined, an Instructor Notification Letter will be issued to the student, and must be presented to the instructor. Letters may be presented throughout the semester, however accommodation requests submitted in a less than timely manner (the day of an exam, etc.) may result in a delay to honor the request.
